144th anniversary of national press
Baku / 07.22.19 / Turan: Today is the 144th anniversary of the National Press of Azerbaijan. On this day in 1875, the first newspaper in Azerbaijani language "Ekinchi" ("Plowman"), founded by prominent educator Hasan Zardabi, was published.
On July 22 Azerbaijan celebrates the Day of the National Press.
The activity of "Ekinchi" was discontinued in 1877 and by this time 56 of its numbers were published.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the traditions of "Ekinchi" were continued in new national newspapers and magazines, including Ziya, Kyashkul, Shargi-rus, Irshad, Molla Nasreddin.
After the occupation of Azerbaijan by Bolshevik Russia, the print media control of the Communist Party.
However, on the eve of the collapse of the USSR, the publication of independent newspapers in the Azerbaijani language was resumed in Azerbaijan, and this process accelerated after 1991, when the republic regained its independence.
On August 6, 1998, censorship was abolished in Azerbaijan.
Currently, more than five thousand publications are registered in Azerbaijan.
But most of them are not published regularly or were forced to stop production.
At present, dozens of sites are blocked on the territory of Azerbaijan, including the online version of Radio Azadlig, the Azadlig newspaper, electronic publications meydan.tv, "bastainfo.az", criminal.az, teref.info, etc.
Today, there are seven journalists held in prisons, including Seymour Hazy, Afgan Mukhtarly, Elchin Ismayilli, Zia Asadli, Araz Guliyev, Ikram Rahimov and Polad Aslanov.
The reports of international organizations indicate the persecution by the authorities of Azerbaijan of some journalists, even after their emigration from the country.
The authorities reject criticism and declare that none of the journalists is persecuted because of their professional activities and in general the media turns out to be "state care", in the form of distributing apartments to journalists, providing direct financial assistance to the media.
At the same time, the beneficiaries of this assistance are loyal to the regime journalists and media bodies. - 05D06-
