Investigation on Case of Director of Newspaper Azadlig Not Conducted - Lawyer
The financial director of the newspaper Azadlig Faig Amirov has health problems, his lawyer Aghil Lahijov, who visited his client on 29 September, told Turan.
The lawyer said Amirov refused to testify. "The investigation accused Amirov of illegal religious activity. However, the investigator questioned him on a completely different subject - financial sources of the newspaper. That is, the investigations do not correspond to the essence of the charges, so he refused to testify,” said the lawyer.
Faig Amirov was arrested on August 20 and two days later the Nasimi court arrested him for 3 months under the Criminal Code: 168.1 (attack on the rights of citizens under the pretext of performing religious rites), 282.2.2 (incitement of national, racial, social discord and religious hatred). The investigation declared Amirov the Imam of the movement Khizmat led by Fethullah Gulen.
PFPA believes the arrest of Amirov is a political order. The party said that the authorities thus try to strangle the leading opposition newspaper Azadlig and discredit the PFPA. -16D04-
