Radio Azadlig Condemns Baku for Prosecuting Khadija Ismail
Baku / 09.08.19 / Turan: On August 7, the Supreme Court of Azerbaijan, in violation of the country's laws and international agreements, including with the United States, upheld the charge of Khadija Ismail of tax evasion. This was stated by the President of Radio Azadlig Jamie Flay.
"We, using every opportunity will defend Khadija Ismail. For, the reason for the fabricated charges against her is her brave journalistic investigations," he said.
The President of Radio Azadlig called on the government of Azerbaijan to lift the ban on her leaving the country, cancel tax fines, unblock bank accounts, and create conditions for her normal life.
In 2008-2010 Ismail led the Baku Bureau of Radio Azadlig. She conducted journalistic investigations into the corruption of the ruling elite.
In 2012, Radio Azadlig engaged a lawyer to protect Ismail in connection with the use of blackmail against her. After the arrest of Ismail in 2014, Radio Azadlig appealed for support to the US Congress and international NGOs. Despite the release of Ismail in May 2016, many sanctions against her are still in effect.
"The well-being of Khadiji and other former employees of the Baku Bureau is in the focus of our attention with a view to protecting them from arbitrary and vengeful actions of the Azerbaijani government," said Flay. -03D06-
