Georgian authorities pass handed Azerbaijanis 23 mosques
The Georgian authorities have decided to transfer the Georgian Muslims Department 23 mosques in the region of Kvemo Kartli (Boorchaly.)
Mufti Beglar Kamashidze appreciates this decision. The Georgian Muslims Department is a legal entity and all existing in Georgia mosque should be registered, he said in interview with Frontnews edition.
"We are working on this issue. The State Agency for Religious Affairs contributed to the process of transferring the ownership by Georgian Muslims the 23 mosques in Kvemo Kartli.
We have been demanding the registration of these mosques for several years. As you know, there are 250 mosques in Georgia, and only a small part of them has been registered," said Kamashidze.
The decision to transfer the mosques was adopted on Wednesday at a meeting of the Council of Religions.
The main population of the region of Kvemo-Kartli, according to various estimates ranging from 300 to 400 thousand Azerbaijanis.
Until 2009, the religious center for them was the Caucasian Muslims Office, located in Baku. After this date, they came under the tutelage of the Georgian Muslims. -02D-
