Baku /08.08.22/Turan: US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken made a statement on the occasion of the 14th anniversary of Russia's invasion of sovereign Georgia, which took place on August 8, 2008.

Blinkn notes that for decades Georgian citizens in Abkhazia and South Ossetia have been living under Russian occupation and Russia's unprovoked further invasion of Ukraine, which began this year, underscores the need for citizens of Georgia and Ukraine to unite in solidarity.

"Russia must be accountable for fulfilling the obligations it assumed under the 2008 ceasefire agreement – to withdraw its forces to the positions that existed before the conflict and ensure unhindered access for the delivery of humanitarian aid. It should also revoke its recognition of the independence of the Georgian regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. This is necessary so that hundreds of thousands of internally displaced persons can return to their homes in a safe and dignified manner," the statement says.

Blinken expressed the steadfastness of the United States in supporting for the people of Georgia as they seek to protect their sovereignty and territorial integrity and find a peaceful solution to the conflict.—0—
