Murder of Aliyev Encroachment on Freedom of Speech - Expert
The murder of the journalist Rasim Aliyev is a direct consequence of the assassination of the views expressed, the expert in the media, Dr. Gulu Maharramli from BSU told Turan and The Voice of America.
He noted the non-disclosure of the murders of journalists in Azerbaijan: in particular, the editor of the magazine Monitor Elmar Huseynov, who was shot dead on the doorstep of his home 10 years ago.
This is everywhere. Similar crimes have taken place in Russia, Ukraine, Georgia and others. No disclosure of such crimes is not in the interests of the government, for not disclosing generates version of the involvement of the authorities themselves in this, Maharramli said.
Referring to the situation in the freedom of the media in general, Maharramli said that in recent years in this area there were serious problems, including beatings, intimidation of journalists, and suspension of independent newspapers.
"There is a paradoxical situation. On the one hand the state allocates a lot of money to support the media, gives reporters apartments and improves technical equipment of the media. In total, it has allocated 20 million manats.
These funds could be enough to open a good independent printing house, build a house or radio media, and finance independent media. But work in this direction is not carried out. On the other hand, the number of independent media has reduced. "
But it is also impossible to completely deny the existence of freedom of the media, said Maharramli, noting the existence of the newspaper Azadlig, the radio Azadlig, and the agency Turan.
Another problem is the voluntary departure of journalists from the principles of democratic journalism, from their own principles. All this is a trend to inflict the press in general.
The safety of journalists must be guaranteed, so the condemnation of the assassination of Rasim Aliyev by the President of Azerbaijan is "encouraging."
Perhaps it makes sense to develop a special law for guarantee of the safety of journalists. On the other hand, the society should not remain indifferent to such things, but the society loses the power of resistance.
According to Maharramli, the way out is creating a state-run or state-supported social structure, which could play the role of a conductor of the state policy in the field of media and protect journalists. -06D-
