The Court of Appeal upholds the verdict of ex-investigator
The Shirvan Court of Appeal today considered the complaint of the former investigator of Zardob Prosecutors Rufat Safarov, sentenced to 9 years in prison on charges of bribery.
According to his lawyer Behruz Bayramov, the appellate court upheld the verdict. The lawyer and Safarov himself stated tampering with evidence.
"Rufat Safarov said that if he was greedy for money, he would have waited with resignation in December 2015, and in January would receive holiday pay and bonuses – all more than 5,000 manats. Who could refuse 5000 and take bribes of 300-500 manat," said the lawyer. He called the court decision "arbitrariness". "We should not so openly violate the laws, so severely crack down on people for freedom of thought," said the lawyer.
He said that the defense will submit an appeal to the Supreme Court, to reach the European Court of Human Rights. The trial was observed by representatives of the US Embassy, Public Committee to Protect Rights of Safarov, former political prisoners.
* Former investigator Rufat Safarov was convicted in September 2016, and before that he was fired from the prosecutor's office for "misconduct."
His father, Eldar Sabiroglu, is a former activist of the ruling party, which has long been a member of parliament, and then the press secretary of the Ministry of Defense, after the dismissal began to criticize the head of the Presidential Administration Ramiz Mehdiyev for mediocrity, and then began a crackdown on Rufat Safarov. -03В06-
