What Caused Police Raid on Ganun Publishing House?

A possible cause of the police raid on the Ganun publishing house is the printing of the novel The Name of the Country: 22 by the opposition writer Zumrud Yagmur by this printing house. Yagmur is the wife of the jailed Deputy Chairman of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan Fuad Gahramanli.

A few days ago at the headquarters of the Civil Solidarity Party (whose leader is Sabir Rustamkhanli, the brother of the owner of the Ganun publishing house Shahbaz Khuduoglu) there was presentation of works by well-known writers and opposition political figures.

The head of the National Council of Democratic Forces (NCDF) Jamil Hasanli called the novel an important event in the literary life of the country, since in modern Azerbaijan such samples of artistic works objectively reflecting the realities of the present period are very rare.

The book written in the genre of dystopia tells about an island having the geographic outlines of Azerbaijan, where the population suffers from harsh dictatorship.

"The novel is unique and interesting. The most interesting thing is that the novel is based on a dramatic story. We are talking about the society of the settlement on the island. There is a dictatorship, there is a dictator, there is a holy monument, which has become a source of suffering for the inhabitants of the island," said Hasanli.

The Popular Front Party (PFPA) leader Ali Kerimli noted Yagmur’s literary talent. "In her works known people are immortalized in generalized images. It is important to capture what is happening in our time in literary works and Zumrud Yagmur fills this gap. The fight described in her book is in the center of the current political struggle," said Kerimli.

A member of the Coordinating Center of NCDF Ibrahim Ibrahimli compared the book with George Orwell's novel 1984.

The same opinion was expressed by the head of the NCDF commission for international affairs Gultakin Hajibeyli. But, in her opinion, the book is not divorced from reality, and it is wrong to call it just "dystopia."

"This book can be called a new trend in literature – dystopia-type realism," Hajibeyli said.

The author herself has made the name clear. The number 22 is the sum of digits 1 + 9 + 9 + 3, which together show the number 1993 - the coming of Heydar Aliyev to power in Azerbaijan. "This is the year when all the present-day troubles of our life were laid.

The worst thing that can be for a society is to establish a dictatorship. It is a pity that Azerbaijan lives with one of the worst forms of dictatorship for 23 years," Yagmur said. -06D--
