Baku/22.09.23/Turan: Azerbaijan and Iran have reached an agreement on doubling the number of Baku and Nakhchivan buses through the territory of the Islamic Republic. The agreement on this was reached at a meeting of the Azerbaijani-Iranian joint commission, the Azerbaijani Land Transport Agency reported. The number of daily buses will be increased from 3 to 6.
The bilateral meeting also discussed the current situation in the field of international road transport between Azerbaijan and Iran, the exchange of statistical data, the problems faced by road carriers, and ways to solve them. As a result of the discussions, appropriate decisions were made.
At the meeting of the commission, the issues of taxes and duties applied to vehicles of both countries, as well as prospects for the development of transportation were also considered.
As a result of Armenia's aggression, land communication between mainland Azerbaijan and its Nakhchivan exclave has been interrupted since the early 1990s and transportation is carried out through Iran.
According to the trilateral statement of the leaders of Azerbaijan, Armenia and the Russian Federation dated November 10, 2020, the Armenian side pledged to open transport communications between the western regions of Azerbaijan and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. On December 18, the Baku Appeals Court rejected the appeal by economist and scholar Gubad Ibadoglu, challenging the decision to maintain his travel ban. Ibadoglu’s defense team had requested the lifting of the ban so that he could accept an invitation to attend the Sakharov Prize award ceremony at the European Parliament on December 17. Ibadoglu was one of the finalists for the prize, but the Narimanov District Court on December 3 had denied this request.

On December 18, a number of pro-government media outlets reported the arrest of former diplomat Ramiz Valiyev, who had held key positions in several Azerbaijani embassies abroad.
