Bakhtiyar Hajiyev addressed the President of Azerbaijan
Baku/20.03.23/Turan: Public activist Bakhtiyar Hajiyev appealed to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev with a request to assist in releasing him from custody. This information was confirmed to Turan by his lawyer Rovshana Rahimli.
In a short statement addressed to the President of Azerbaijan, Hajiyev notes that since December 9, 2022, he has been under arrest in connection with the charges against him under Articles 221.2 (hooliganism) and 289.1 (disrespect for the court) of the Criminal Code.
He asks the head of state "to assist" in his release from arrest.
The lawyer noted that every citizen has the right to apply to the head of state with a request for assistance in restoring their rights.
In the situation with Bakhtiyar Gadzhiev, this is quite understandable, since repeated attempts to achieve release through appeals and petitions turned out to be futile.
She expressed hope that Hajiyev's appeal to the president would have positive results.
“We very much hope that Bakhtiyar Hajiyev will not only be released from custody, but that his illegal criminal prosecution will be stopped in general,” the lawyer emphasized.
* Bakhtiyar Hajiyev was arrested on December 9 last year on charges of hooliganism and contempt of court. On the same day, the Khatai District Court arrested him for 1 month and 20 days.
On December 15, Hajiyev went on a hunger strike demanding his release. He ended his hunger strike on December 28 after persistent calls from members of the public and family members. But on January 9, after the Court of Appeal denied his release from custody, he resumed his hunger strike, which continues to this day.
On January 21, the court extended Hajiyev's term of imprisonment for another month, and on February 23, the Khatai court extended the term of arrest for another 2 months - on April 28.
The courts did not satisfy the numerous petitions of lawyers to change Hajiyev's extreme measure of restraint to house arrest or release on bail pending the start of the trial.
On February 28, on the 51st day of the hunger strike, Hajiyev ended the hunger strike.
Representatives of the State Department, the US Senate, the European Union, the Council of Europe and a number of international NGOs have repeatedly called for the release of Hajiyev from custody. -03B06-
