Center for Monitoring Political Prisoners condemned torture of believers
The Center for Monitoring Political Prisoners Political Prisoners issued a statement in connection with the trial in the case of Thale Bagirzade, a leader of the "Muslim unity" Movement and other defendants in the "case of Nardaran." "We and the entire democratic public of Azerbaijan are angered by biased trial. Despite numerous statements by the accused on cruel torture against them, the judges did not investigate these complaints. On the contrary, public prosecutors and judges help witnesses - employees of the Main Directorate for Combating Organized Crime MIA to avoid question f lawyers and defendants exposing their deeds," said the head of the Monitoring Centre Elshan Hasanov.
With regard to the defendants in the "case of Nardaran" were violated Article 3 (prohibition of torture), 6 (right to a fair trial), 13 (right to an effective remedy) and 14 (prohibition of discrimination) of the European Convention for human rights and freedoms, he said. Testimonies by the arrested and some witnesses have questioned the legitimacy of the use of excessive force in the village of Nardaran, said the statement.
"We demand an objective investigation of torture, the examination with the participation of independent experts. We condemn the unwarranted use of weapons by the police as a result of which people were killed," reads the statement by the Center. --06В--
