Fuad Gahramanly Considers Police Warning Illegal
Baku / 05/16/19 / Turan: Deputy Chairman of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA) Fuad Gahramanly was summoned 16 to the Main Police Department of Baku (MPD) on May 16.
According to Gahramanly, who talked with Turan, he was received by Nurlan Mammadkhanly, head of the public security department of the MPD. The conversation was attended by other management staff.
'They told me that the reason for calling me to the police were my publications, in which I admitted statements allegedly "detrimental to stability in the country." I was told that if I continue on the same path, then in the country "there may be a threat to stability" and "an atmosphere of confrontation." I was warned not to do more of this, otherwise it would be necessary to take measures envisaged by the law,' Gahramanly said.
He considers the warning unjustified and illegal. 'In my speeches and publications there was nothing illegal, confrontational, or contributing to the confrontation. Our goal and requirement is to ensure freedom of assembly in the country. People should be able to express their opinions freely. Otherwise, tensions in society will grow and this will lead to a social explosion and cataclysms. This is against what we warned in our speeches and publications. Our position is unchanged and it is impossible to intimidate us,' Gahramanly said.
* Fuad Gahramanly was arrested in December 2015 after he wrote a comment on Facebook in connection with a special operation against activists of the Muslim Unity Movement in Nardaran.
He was convicted with the defendants in this case to 10 years in prison for 'anti-state appeals.' Amnesty International recognized Gahramanly as a 'prisoner of conscience.'
Gahramanly was released in accordance with the order of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev dated March 16, 2019. - 03B06--
