How Differential System in Gas and Electricity Tariffs Will Be Settled
Azerbaijan for the first time starts a “differentiated system” of payment for electricity and gas. How will calculations with counters be carried out, while many users have smart meters with cards installed?
According to the head of the press service of Azerigaz Ibrahim Kerbalayev, for subscribers who still use mechanical counters inspectors from the gas department will monitor their meters.
Smart gas meters are designed in such a way that they will calculate the rate in case of exceeding the limit by themselves.
“From 1 January 2017 the population will pay 0.1 AZN per cubic meter of gas as long as the fuel reaches the level of 1,500 cubic meters. And if the subscriber has this limit exhausted before the end of the year, then from this point the rate of 0.2 AZN per cubic meter will be applied,” Kerbalayev said.
As for electricity meters, as explained by the Deputy Chairman of JSC Azerishyg Ramil Yusifov, on 30 November all the counters with their indexes will be checked by the company. "The users will pay the old rate of 0.07 AZN per kilowatt / hour from December 1, but once the limit of 250 kilowatt-hours (17.5 AZN) is reached, it will account for the new tariff – 0.11 AZN,” he said.
Note that by November 1, Azerigaz had 1.99 million customers, while JSC Azerishyg had more than 2.4 million. -12B—

Azerbaijan's financial standing continues to strengthen as the country's foreign currency reserves have surged to $71 billion as of January 1, 2025, according to the Ministry of Finance. This figure, which includes reserves held by the State Oil Fund of Azerbaijan (SOFAZ) and the Central Bank of Azerbaijan (CBA), far exceeds the nation's external debt, which stands at a fraction of its reserves, specifically nearly 14 times less. This robust reserve position reflects Azerbaijan's fiscal stability and the government’s strategic economic management.
