Renowned Architect and Critic May Enter Azerbaijani Parliament
In a surprising turn of events, the Central Election Commission has approved the candidacy of architect Elchin Aliyev for the upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled for September. Known for his outspoken criticism of Baku's construction and renovation projects, Aliyev has long accused the capital's executive authority of destroying the city's historical character. As an expert frequently cited in the media, he has meticulously examined the shortcomings of the Baku city administration and documented Azerbaijan's unique architectural heritage.
"I believe it is my duty to speak out against the unworthy treatment of our national architectural heritage and raise my voice when so many remain silent. This is my civic responsibility," Aliyev shared on social media. "Yesterday, after submitting my signature sheets, I was registered as a candidate and received my certificate."
The 56-year-old architect will contest the 23rd Nasimi-Sabail electoral district in Baku. Among his competitors are prominent figures such as the renowned economist Ziya Samedzade, 84, poet and singer Elza Seyidcahan, a member of the country's Writers' Union, and Elnur Ragimov, 35, representing the Yeni Azerbaijan party and simultaneously the son of the director of the Baku Garment Factory.
Aliyev's candidacy introduces a fresh dynamic to the election atmosphere, bringing his expertise and passion for preserving Azerbaijan's architectural heritage into the legislative arena.
