The sports arena that will host the I EuropeanOlympic Games named
Saturday under the chairmanship of the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, there was held the first meeting of the Organizing Committee of the first European Games, which will be held in Baku in 2015.
As the Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the first European Games Mehriban Aliyeva said, the envisaged I European games are to be held in June-July 2015. Around 5,000 athletes are expected to participate in the competitions. It is expected that the number of members of the official delegations will be approximately 1,000 people. For coverage of the event expected to arrive in Baku are about two thousand representatives of the foreign media. In accordance with the prior agreement with the European Olympic Committee and sports federations in Europe, the program of the European Games I should include at least 12 of the 28 Olympic sports and two non-Olympic sports. Of the sports federations of Europe there have already been received letters of intent to conduct competitions in 17 Olympic sports.
They include wrestling, handball, volleyball, gymnastics, beach volleyball, boxing, judo, taekwondo, badminton, fencing, shooting, archery, table tennis, swimming, diving, water polo and rugby-7. Given that the European games will be held for the first time in history, the European Olympic Committee is continuing negotiations on many issues and the articulated figures may vary.
The official opening and closing of the I European Games is to be held at the Olympic Stadium for 65,000 seats, which is based in Baku, near Lake Boyukshor.
Wrestling and judo are envisaged to take place in the 7100-seat Sports and Concert Complex named after Heydar Aliyev. The competitions in handball and volleyball are to be held in the Baku Crystal Hall, which seats 25,000 spectators. The competitions in Rugby-7 are envisaged for the stadium "8-km" with the capacity of 11 thousand spectators. The competitions in table tennis, fencing and taekwondo are to be held in the Baku Expo Center. The boxing events are envisaged to take place in the 3250-seat local sports complex Serhedchi, the badminton contests will be held in the 1,628-seat Palace of Hand Games and the archery contests - at the 7,000-seat stadium Shafa.
At the time of the I European Games the competitions in sports and gymnastics are envisaged to take place in a newly built gym complex. The competitions in swimming and diving are scheduled to be held in the Water Sports Center that is under construction in Baku. For the competition in water polo a temporary arena is to be built near the Center. If field events are held, the 32,200-seat National Stadium named after Tofik Bakhramov can be used. For competitions in beach volleyball a temporary arena should be built on the Promenade.
In order to house the athletes, who will participate in the games, the Athletic Village will be established. And members of the media will be available in the Media Village. The center, which will be created in the area, and the Media Center in the Baku Crystal Hall will create the required conditions for them, Mehriban Aliyeva said. - 06D -
