Today the UN Security Council will hold a meeting on Iran
Baku / 05.01.18 / Turan: The UN Security Council will hold an emergency meeting on Friday on the events in Iran, the Voice of America reported. The meeting will be held, contrary to Russia's attempts to prevent this, calling the hearing "an attempt to interfere" in Iran's internal affairs. On Thursday the US filed an official request for a meeting, but Russia and several other members of the Security Council are not convinced that this body should discuss riots in Iran, diplomats say. The US actively lobbied for the meeting, US Ambassador Nikki Haley said earlier that she wants to hold a meeting to demonstrate support for the demonstrators.
"The Iranian people demand freedom," she said on Tuesday. "All freedom-loving people must support them in this endeavor." However, on Thursday, a senior Russian diplomat warned the US against attempts that he described as "attempts to interfere in Iran's internal affairs." During the protests in Iran, which began on December 28, 21 people were killed and several hundred were arrested.
The Iranian Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Golamali Hoshra, sent a letter to the Security Council and UN Secretary General Antoniu Gutteres on Wednesday, accusing the US of interfering in the internal affairs of his country and condemning Washington's statements. -02D-
