U.S. 'Sees No Indication' That Russia Is Preparing To Use Nuclear Weapon — State Department
Washington D.C./26.05.23/Turan: The United States sees no reason to adjust its strategic nuclear posture in connection with reports that Russia has begun preparations for storing its tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus, the State Department said on Thursday, TURAN's Washington correspondent reports.
Russia and Belarus signed documents in Minsk Thursday morning defining the procedure for storing Russian nuclear weapons in a special storage facility on Belarusian soil.
"We strongly condemn the arrangement," State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller told TURAN's Washington correspondent during a daily briefing.
"It’s the latest example of irresponsible behavior that we have seen from Russia since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine over a year ago," he said.
Miller went on to add that the use of chemical, biological, or nuclear weapons "would be met with severe consequences."
"But in response to this report, I will just add we have seen no reason to adjust our strategic nuclear posture or any indications that Russia is preparing to use a nuclear weapon," he concluded.
