Consideration of the appeal of Giyas Ibrahimov
Baku / 22.05.17 / Turan: On May 22, the Baku Appeals Court resumed consideration of the complaint of the activist of the NİDA movement Giyas Ibrahimov, who was arrested for graffiti on the monument to Heydar Aliyev. Reporting about this a lawyer Elchin Sadigov noted earlier that despite the problems with eyesight Ibrahimov did not have him in medical care in the pretrial detention center. Ibrahimov appealed to the leadership in the jail, but he was told that for examination and radiation there should be an appeal court's permission.
However, the judge did not grant the petition and stated that the prisoner had the right to medical assistance and it was being implemented by the jail administration. As to the nature of the proceedings, the defense drew attention to the fact that the investigation was conducted with gross violations of the law, the activist was tortured and this evidence cannot be considered reliable. The trial will continue on May 31. Ibrahimov was sentenced to 10 years in prison on charges of illicit drug trafficking on a large scale. Amnesty International recognized him as a "prisoner of conscience". -05D06--
