House of the Prophet is under threat

"The place in Mecca, where it is believed, the Prophet Muhammad was born, will soon to be" buried under the marble, "and there will be a huge royal palace, reads the article by Andrew Johnston in the British newspaper The Independent.  The construction projects amounting several billion pounds has already led to the destruction of hundreds of historical monuments in Mecca.

The project, which began several years ago, is designed to expand the Masjid al-Haram - Grand Mosque - in order to receive millions of pilgrims during the Hajj, the article says.

According to the Gulf Institute in Washington, DC, up to 95% of millennial buildings in Mecca were destroyed to make way for luxury hotels, apartments and shopping malls, writes Johnson.

"Last week, the remaining Ottoman towers 500 years ago, erected in honor of the Prophet's ascension to heaven, were destroyed,"  the newspaper said, citing the comment of Dr. Irfan Alawi of British Islamic Heritage Research Foundation.

According to the expert, "House  Mawlid" where, as it is believed,  the Prophet was born in the year 570, may be destroyed before the end of the year. "

The new royal palace  is to be built for the  King Abdullah, who is the official custodian of the mosque. Many people condemning the building, do not want to speak publicly, fearing the regime, the article says.

Saudi Arabia is subject to strict Wahhabi version of Islam, which forbids the worship of any subject or "holy".

Rooms  of the "House   Mawlid" are underground, in 1951, the library was built over it to keep them. -02D-
