Transfer of Letter to Minister of Internal Affairs Resulted in Detention of Journalists
Baku / 01.06.18 / Turan: This morning about 20 representatives of civil society and media came to the Ministry of Internal Affairs to deliver a collective letter addressed to Minister Ramil Usubov.
The text of the appeal was made public on the eve and contained a call to the Minister to arrest all signatories of the appeal, as they also participated in street festivities and processions on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Azerbaijani People's Republic on May 28.
After that, the police arrested four activists of the REAL party, accusing them of hooliganism and violation of public order.
The lawlessness made by the police caused deep indignation of the public, more than 100 representatives of which sent the above appeal to the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
Arriving at the Ministry in the morning, the activists for a long time could not get the press service to accept the text of the appeal. After lengthy negotiations with a representative of the press service, the activists were advised to drop the letters addressed to the Minister in a box.
After this was done, the initiator of this action, journalist Hadidja Ismayilova made a short statement for colleagues about this event. However, it took about 30 seconds for two police officers standing nearby to take away journalist Ramin Deko and a member of Musavat party Elman Fattah, who were taking Ismayilova"s photos. The police looked at their photos and said it was not allowed to take photos near the building. Forty minutes later the journalists were released. -02B-

The closure of Azerbaijan's land borders was discussed during the parliamentary session on November 25. While the government’s decision cites the coronavirus pandemic as the main reason—despite the World Health Organization declaring its end last year—Zahid Oruj, Chair of the Human Rights Committee in the Milli Majlis, pointed to other factors. He stated, "Opening the borders could result in an influx of hundreds of thousands of non-Azerbaijani refugees due to the Russia-Ukraine war. Additionally, in Iran, many are prepared to cross into Azerbaijan to safeguard their lives and assets amid military strikes. Such waves of refugees could lead to humanitarian, social, and cultural clashes that may threaten political stability."
