Shah Deniz Consortium Officially Chose TAP

The Shah Deniz Consortium in Baku today officially announced the selection of the route of Trans-Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) for the transportation of Azerbaijani gas to Europe under the Stage 2.

The ceremony of announcement of the route selection, which was attended by the shareholders of Shah-Deniz and the Management of the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan, as well as representatives of the diplomatic corps, was held at the Four Seasons Hotel in Baku.
President of BP in Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey Birrel Gordon said that in the initial stage the pipeline will transport about 10 billion cubic meters of gas per year. In the future, the pipeline will transport gas from other producing fields in Azerbaijan and from planned projects such as Shafag-Asiman. The decision to invest is in sight to the end of the year.

SOCAR President Rovnag Abdullayev, in turn, noted that TAP will be an important part of the Southern Gas Corridor. He added that this is only the first link of the corridor. In the future, there may also be a gas pipeline Bulgaria-Romania-Hungary-Austria, that is Nabucco West.

U.S. Ambassador Richard Morningstar welcomed the decision of the consortium. He said the United States supports the project to deliver gas to South-East Europe. In the future, this project could be expanded. America also welcomed the decision of the connecting line between Bulgaria and Romania.

Calling the decision to select TAP success, Morningstar said that "it's not over", adding the possibility of implementing measures for increasing the volume of gas also on the Nabucco West route.

He compared the decision on the success of TAP with quarterfinals in sports, making it clear that there still will be significant new solutions. It should be noted that on June 26 in Athens the TAP (Trans Adriatic Pipeline) Consortium and the Greek government signed an agreement on the transit of gas that will pass through the territories of Greece, Albania and Italy. TAP, the length of which will be 520 km, has its origins on the Greek-Turkish border, and then moves to Italy via Albania and the underwater part of the Adriatic Sea. TAP is supposed to supply natural gas to markets in Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro.

The start of operation of the gas pipeline worth 2.5 billion euros is planned for 2019, when Shah Deniz-2 on the Caspian Sea becomes fully operational.

The initial volume of gas supplies will amount to 10 billion cubic meters per year and a maximum of 20 billion cubic meters per year, which is less than 5% of the EU requirements.

TAP's shareholders are the Swiss company Axpo (42.5%), Norway's Statoil (42.5%) and Germany's E.ON (15%). The headquarters of the consortium is located in the Swiss town of Bar. The company has branches in Athens, Rome and Tirana and offices in Brussels and Istanbul. -0 -
