Short memory of Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry

The resolution of the European Parliament that condemned the arrest of the head of the civil movement REAL Ilgar Mamedov sparked an angry reaction from the official Baku. Every time the structures of the EU criticize human rights violations in Azerbaijan, the authorities parry this as bias from European officials and as their ignoring the violation of the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan.

These allegations were repeated yesterday by the Foreign Ministry, which claimed that in 20 years the European Parliament has not given any assessment to the Karabakh conflict.

However, just a year ago (April 18, 2012), the Foreign Ministry of Azerbaijan with great satisfaction commented two European Parliament resolutions on EU negotiations over agreements with Armenia and Azerbaijan. Official Baku did not conceal its satisfaction that the documents supported the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan and offered to settle the Karabakh conflict on the basis of this principle.
Then they commented on the European Parliament's resolution and hastily gathered journalists at a briefing arranged by the Foreign Ministry spokesman Elman Abdullayev.

He noted that the resolution on Azerbaijan referred to the confirmation of the provisions of the previous EP resolution of 20 May 2010. They spoke on the EU strategy for the South Caucasus, which has also expressed support for the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan and noted the need for the withdrawal of Armenian troops from the occupied territories of Azerbaijan.

Positive aspects of the EP resolution on Armenia Abdullayev called the inclusion of language in the document that the "occupation of the territory by third countries is contrary to the principles of the European Neighbourhood Policy" and "does great harm to the implementation of the" Eastern Partnership ". Moreover, the resolution pointed to the illegal activities of the Armenian armed forces on the territory of Azerbaijan. In particular, they meant regular military maneuvers, upgrade of military equipment and personnel, the establishment of a line of defense in depth. It also called for Armenia not to send regular army conscripts to serve in Nagorno-Karabakh.

It turns out that the assertion that the European Parliament had never expressed attitude to the occupation of Azerbaijani territories is false, to put it mildly. -06D-
