Special Representatives of NATO Secretary General to visit Azerbaijan next week
Baku / 22.09.17 / Turan: Special Representative of the NATO Secretary General for the Caucasus and Central Asia James Appathurai will visit Azerbaijan next week. The purpose of this visit is to participate in events organized by ANAMA (Azerbaijan National Agency for Demining). In particular, with the participation of Appathurai on September 26, the presentation of the third stage of the Jeyranchel project, implemented by the ANAMA-NATO / NSPA Trust Fund "Partnership for Peace" will take place. The territory of Jeyranchel is located in the north-west of Azerbaijan along the border with Georgia. In Soviet times - 1955-1991, it was used as a military training ground and therefore this area was full of unexploded ordnance (NBP). At the first stage of the Jeyranchel project (April 2012 - July 2014), the area of 19 square kilometers meters were. Here, 14,645 NBP and 173 anti-tank mines were discovered and rendered harmless. In the second phase of the project from July 2014 to July 2016. The territory was cleared with an area of 23, 5 sq. km. ANAMA specialists found and neutralized 1,553 NBP and thousands of metal fragments. The third stage began in January 2017 and covers 22 km. According to the Turkish newspaper Sabah, officials from the Istanbul Prosecutor's Office's Anti-Smuggling Unit have detained an Azerbaijani citizen with a large shipment of gold. The detention took place near the Vadi İstanbul shopping center in the Sarıyer district, where a taxi was stopped. During the search, 70 kg of gold was found. The Azerbaijani citizen in the vehicle claimed ownership of the cargo and also stated that he was a diplomat. The investigation by the prosecutor's office is ongoing, reports Sabah newspaper.
