U.S. And Ukraine To Discuss Security Guarantees This Week
Washington D.C./01.08.23/Turan: The United States and Ukrainian governments will begin consultations on possible future security guarantees to Ukraine as early as this week, the State Department said on Monday, TURAN's Washington correspondent reports.
"Negotiations will begin this week," spokesperson Matthew Miller told a daily press briefing. According to him, the meeting will take place in an online format and the U.S. side will be represented by a Deputy Secretary of State.
"I wouldn’t want to comment about the eventual outcomes of talks that are just beginning other than to make clear what President Biden and other leaders of the G7 and the EU and, now, the other 12 nations that have joined the statement have made clear, is that we are committed to the long-term security of Ukraine and helping Ukraine build a long-term security infrastructure that can deter Russian aggression," Miller said.
"What the details of that will look like, of course, will be something that will be covered in these conversations and conversations that will go on for some time," he added.
Miller noted that these consultations are about future guarantees and do not relate to the military assistance that the U.S. has already been providing to Ukraine.
The spokesperson also mentioned that the U.S. government officials will be present at a Ukraine peace summit in Saudi Arabia this week.
