Human Rights Activists: 130 Political Prisoners in Azerbaijan
Baku / 01.09.18 / Turan: The working group on compilation of the list of political prisoners on September 1 presented another updated list of political prisoners in Azerbaijan. It includes the names of 130 individuals. This is stated in the press release of the working group.
It notes that the documents at the disposal of the working group and the observation of trials allow 128 people to be considered political prisoners, including 9 journalists and bloggers, 1 human rights activist, 17 political and public activists, 68 religious activists, 1 poet, 3 people sentenced to life imprisonment, 14 arrested for participation in social protests, 2 former government officials, 2 "political relatives" (relatives of politicians), and 10 believers from the group Saeed Dadashbeyli (were convicted back in 2007).
The cases of two people remain under monitoring.
From the previous list of the working group, promulgated on March 22, 22 people were released. Of these, 9 have been pardoned, 11 have been released upon completion of the sentence, and 2 have been released conditionally.
At the same time, 8 people (Abulfaz Bunyadov, Orkhan Bakhyshly, Mirfeyzullah Seyidov, Saleh Rustamov, Vidadi Rustamli, Aghil Maharramov, Babek Hasanov, Ruslan Nasirli) have been recognized as political prisoners and added to the list.
The working group believes that in fact the number of political prisoners is much higher than in this list. "The repressive environment forces many people to refrain from publicizing their cases On the other hand, legal non-awareness, repressive policy against lawyers, their acute lack of power, and lack of legal protection mechanisms in the regions makes it difficult to collect information and documents for the recognition of these persons as political prisoners," the statement goes on.
The working group points out that, since late 2017, intense pressure has been exerted on lawyers working with political prisoners. The powers of the lawyer Yalchin Imanov were completely discontinued, and the lawyers Fakhraddin Mehdiyev, Asabali Mustafayev, and Nemat Kerimli were suspended from the Bar for 1 year.
The press release also points out the appointment of the new PACE rapporteur on political prisoners in Azerbaijan, Icelandic deputy Torhild Sunnah Evarsdottiri, who has to prepare a report.
The Azerbaijani authorities reject the presence of political prisoners in the country.
The working group includes leading human rights activists, civil activists and legal experts of Azerbaijan. Its coordinators are human rights activists Intigam Aliyev and Rasul Jafarov. -06D--
