Bəxtiyar Hacıyev
On the 8th day of the hunger strike, the condition of Bakhtiyar Hajiyev deteriorated
Baku/22.12.22/Turan: Public activist Bakhtiyar Hajiyev has been on hunger strike for the eighth day in the Baku pre-trial detention center N1. Lawyer Javad Javadov, who visited him on Thursday, told Turan that the activist's health had worsened.
“Bakhtiyar said that today he has low blood pressure - 90/60, and the temperature has dropped to 35.4, pulse - 76. During the day he lost another half a kilo and weighs 79.5 kg. Thus, he has already lost 5 kg in weight.
“From weakness, he sometimes loses his balance and tries not to fall. However, he will continue his hunger strike until he is released,” the lawyer said. According to him, the day before, Bakhtiyar was transferred to the sanitary unit of the pre-trial detention center.
The lawyer also said that on December 23, the Baku Court of Appeal will consider the activist's complaint about the refusal to transfer him to house arrest.
“We expect the court of appeal to change the measure of restraint,” Javadov said. According to him, even on the far-fetched charges brought against Hajiyev, according to the law, his detention is not allowed. Thed talk is about crimes that do not pose a public danger. Hajiyev faces up to 1.5 years in prison, although under the law, detention is allowed if the accused can be sentenced to more than 3 years. “We hope that the court will cancel the decision to arrest,” the lawyer said.
On December 9, Bakhtiyar Hajiyev was detained on charges of hooliganism and contempt of court. On the same day, the Khatai District Court arrested him for 1 month and 20 days. The defense appealed this decision, while Hajiyev himself promised to go on an indefinite hunger strike if the court did not satisfy the complaint.
On December 15, the Court of Appeal dismissed Hajiyev's complaint. --0--

Azerbaijani historian and public figure Dr. Jamil Hasanli has sharply criticized the recent wave of arrests targeting journalists, comparing the situation to the mass repressions of 1937 under Soviet rule. Speaking out on Saturday, Hasanli alleged that journalists working for the Baku-based "Meydan TV" were collectively detained, marking a grim milestone in the country's press freedom landscape.

For Elshan Hasanov, a 46-year-old man with severe hearing impairment (fourth-degree), what should have been a straightforward process to receive government-provided hearing aids has turned into a bureaucratic nightmare involving three healthcare agencies. As a result, Hasanov is forced to pay nearly 60 manats ($35) several times a year for what used to be a free service—a cost he says is untenable on his modest disability pension.
