Participation of women in Sustainable Development
Baku/09.06.17/Turan: A panel discussion on the topic of "Sustainable Development Goals: Women and Development" was jointly organized today by the UN Office in Azerbaijan and the National Coordination Council for Sustainable Development (NCCSD).
The main objective of this event was to discuss the ways to increase active women participation in the social life and to deliberate the targets and indicators related to the fifth Sustainable Development Goal on gender equality and women"s empowerment, in order to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) in Azerbaijan.
Such panel discussion as well as the ones previously held with academia and civil society contributed to the development of the Voluntary National Review to be presented in the United Nation High-Level Political Forum in July 2017. These discussions created an inclusive conditions for the representatives of diverse segments of society to express their opinions.
Mr. Ali Ahmadov, the Chairperson of the National Coordination Council, Mr. Ghulam M. Isaczai, UN Resident Coordinator, Ms. Hijran Huseynova, Chairperson of State Committee of Family, Women and Children Affairs, Ms. Bahar Muradova, Deputy Chairperson of the Parliament and Ms. Sevinj Hasanova, Deputy Minister of Economy took part at the panel discussion dedicated to "women and development". The discussions were followed by expert"s presentations on the issues of women"s active participation in development, their challenges and solutions and Q&A session amongst participants and panelists.
In his speech, Mr. Ali Ahmadov stated the importance of such discussions and emphasized the existence of strong political will on equal and unbiased representation of women in the society and governmental structures.
Highlighting the field of gender equality and women"s empowerment in Azerbaijan as a priority area of the United Nations, Mr. Ghulam M. Isaczai stated that this support would further continue. "UNDP and UN will continue to work with the Government, civil society and other partners to clear away any barriers to gender equality." Mr. İsaczai mentioned.
"The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by the UN General Assembly, urges that no one be left behind. That means leaving no woman behind - anywhere. This reflects the growing consensus that gender equality is a driver of progress across all development goals.." Mr. Isaczai also stressed in his speech.
On October 6th 2016, the President of Azerbaijan signed a decree on the establishment of the National Coordination Council for Sustainable Development. This marks a significant step towards integrating the SDGs into the national development agenda in the country. The National Coordination Council also plays a coordinating role in the development of the 2017 Voluntary National Review on behalf of the Government of Azerbaijan for the High-Level Political Forum to be held in New-York in July 2017. -0-

In 2017, the Sumgayit City Court ruled to evict the Aliyev family—refugees from Gubadli (Akper, Sarvinaz, Ramil, and two other family members)—from an illegally occupied apartment in the 12th microdistrict, Building 7A, Apartment 35. The court ordered the property be returned to its rightful owner, Samaya Aliyeva. However, the Ministry of Justice intervened, citing a presidential decree from July 1, 2004, which approved a state program for improving the living and working conditions of refugees. Under this directive, refugees without alternative housing cannot be evicted until they are provided with a replacement residence by the Executive Authority.
