Police Disrupt Meeting of PFPA Activists in Sabirabad
Baku / 09.30.19 / Turan: On September 29, in Sabirabad, police prevented a meeting of local activists of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA).
The meeting of the Mejlis of the PFPA regional organization was to be held in the office of this structure in the city of Sabirabad, located 172 km southwest of Baku.
"A few minutes before the meeting, about 20 police officers came to our office, headed by the deputy chief of the district department, Agshin Fatiyev. They demanded that our activists break up," said Sahib Rustamli, head of the PFPA Sabirabad district organization.
According to him, in order to avoid confrontation, the activists left the premises. After that, the deputy chief ordered the office doors to be "blocked".
Rustamli believes that the premises at the local PFPA branch will be completely taken away.
After the meeting that did not take place, the activists just wanted to chat in a tea house. However, everywhere the owners of the tea houses asked them to leave these facilities, fearing pressure from the local authorities.
According to Rustamli, the pressure on the Popular Front Party Party in Sabirabad increased after Sirajaddin Jabbarov, who became famous in the neighboring Saatly region by banning the wedding of the opposition activist Ruslan Nasirli in the local celebration house, was appointed head of the executive branch in the district.
On September 22, police foiled the Musavat party's conference in Lankaran. A few days earlier, participants in the meeting of PFPA activists in Ganja were briefly detained.
In May, the meetings of Musavat and PFPA in Zagatala and Masally were disrupted. -06B-

Historian Jamil Hasanli's recent Facebook post has reignited debates over Azerbaijan's pension system and labor market, exposing significant shortcomings in social welfare and employment policies. The sharp critique followed Minister of Labor and Social Protection Sahil Babayev's parliamentary statement that individuals who have never worked or contributed to social insurance should not be eligible for pensions. The statement has drawn attention to entrenched structural issues in Azerbaijan's labor and pension frameworks, where employment gaps and limited social safety nets exacerbate inequality.
