State Security Service: Religious Extremists Rendered Harmless in Khachmaz
Baku / 06.03.18 / Turan: Employees of the State Security Service conducted an operation to render harmless members of the religious extremist group Khachmaz Jamaat, which was part of the international terrorist structure. This is stated in the message of the SSS circulated on the morning of March 7.
According to the same source, the group was preparing terrorist acts. A criminal case was initiated under articles 28, 214.2.1, 214.2.3 (preparation of terror), 218.2 (participation in a criminal community).
On March 6, in the Khachmaz district (180 km north of Baku) an operation was carried out to detain members of the group, Mammadov Sabir and Salimov Tarlan. However, they refused to disarm and provided armed resistance. They were killed by return fire.
On the spot, an explosive device and explosives, and various types of weapons were seized.
To which particular radical group these individuals belonged is not reported. However, the position of Wahhabis (Salafis) is quite strong in Khachmaz and the neighboring Gusar region.
