Activist Ilham Aslanoglu released early from prison
Baku/06.03.22/Turan: Lawyer and activist Ilham Aslanoglu (Tahmazov) was released from prison ahead of schedule. This decision was made on March 5 by the Sheki Court of Appeal, annulling the sentence to deprive Aslanoglu of imprisonment for a period of 5 months on charges of libel. Aslanoglu himself informed Turan about this.
Activist Aslanoglu became known for actively publicizing the facts of torture against the defendants in the "Terter case".
On January 28, the Yevlakh District Court found Aslanoglu guilty under Art. 147.2 (slander about committing a serious crime) and sentenced to five months in prison.
The plaintiff in the case was Takhir Guliyev, the father of Vasif Guliyev, who died in the 44-day war.
The reason for the lawsuit was Aslanoglu’s statement on social networks that V. Guliyev was involved in the death of senior lieutenant Adil Sabirli, who was tortured to death under torture during the investigation of the Terter case in 2017. At the same time, Aslanoglu referred to the father of A. Sabirli.
However, on appeal, the private prosecutor withdrew the complaint. On this basis, the Court of Appeal stopped the persecution of Aslanoglu and released him.
Aslanoglu told Turan that he would continue his human rights work.—06B-
