Food Prices Fell in January

In January, average prices of the consumer basket on 30 kinds of basic food products of domestic production, made up by Turan New Agency, declined by 6.4%.

Most of all, prices reduced for vegetables: cucumbers (-48.5%) and tomatoes (28.5%). Prices also reduced for flour (-28.5%), eggs (-16.6%), yogurt (-14.5%), sugar (-5.8%), mutton (-5.2%), and chicken (-3.5%). Prices rose for cabbages (+ 37.2%) and apples (+10%). For other products prices generally remained stable.

Prices fell due to the establishment of state control over pricing and the release of grain imports from duties, and the exchange rate stabilization of AZN in the post-devaluation period. Also, there is a decrease in the people’s purchasing power, which increased after the second wave of devaluation on 21 December.

In December, 2015 in Baku the average price of consumer goods increased by 11.52%, mostly for goods imported. It is expected that prices will remain stable in February.
