Lavrov: RF Calls for Confidence-building Measures on Nagorno-Karabakh
The Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov at the meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on April 6 said that Russia calls for confidence-building measures on Nagorno-Karabakh. Lavrov also said that Russia will help to ensure that the cease-fire in Nagorno-Karabakh is observed, according to ITAR-TASS.
"At the level of President, Prime Minister, Foreign Ministry, Defense Ministry and General Staff we have taken all necessary measures to help the parties reach an agreement on a cease-fire," he said. "We are ready to contribute to the agreement so that it is not violated. It is important to calm the situation," he noted.
Azerbaijan is set to continue talks on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev stated.
"We are committed to the continuation of negotiations. Azerbaijan is committed to the negotiation process and the settlement of the conflict by peaceful means based on international law," said the head of Azerbaijan.
Aliyev also expressed his satisfaction with the development of the bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and the Russian Federation.
"This is a high level of relations of strategic partnership, which cover almost all the spheres. Russia and Azerbaijan are two friends, two neighbors. We value these relationships and try to develop them. This includes cooperation in political and humanitarian areas, economy and energy," said Aliyev.
Lavrov, referring to the upcoming April 7 Iran-Russia-Azerbaijan trilateral meeting, noted its importance in terms of the development of collective regional response to terrorism.
"Considering that in the territory of the three countries as well as our other neighbors there are routes of supply of terrorists and insurgents traffic, it is important to establish cooperation to combat this phenomenon collectively," Lavrov said.
He also said it is important for Iran, Russia and Azerbaijan to use their "geopolitical position in the interests of transport routes, the strategic relations and energy cooperation." These issues were discussed earlier, but in disparate formats, the minister added.
"Of course, our bilateral strategic partnership will also be considered tomorrow. I will have a separate meeting with my colleague" the minister said. -06D--
