Rally in Support of Men Arrested for Graffiti on Monument to Heydar Aliyev
In front of the Azerbaijani Embassy in Tbilisi a protest action was held on November 18 against the prosecution of the youth activists Bayram Mammadov and Giyas Ibrahimov, who wrote slogans on the monument to Heydar Aliyev in Baku.
The rally was organized by young Georgian activists and political emigrants from Azerbaijan. According to information from social networks, the protesters also demanded the release of other activists.
The protesters demanded that the Azerbaijani government fulfill its obligations to the Council of Europe and the provisions of European conventions and chanted the slogan ‘Freedom!’
* Mammadov and Ibrahimov were arrested on May 10, a few hours after they had written slogans on the monument to Heydar Aliyev. The slogans were ‘Happy slavery!’ and ‘Down with the system!’ The young people were accused of drug trafficking on a large scale. Ibrahimov has been sentenced to 10 years in prison. The trial of Mammadov is continued. Amnesty International has recognized both activists ‘prisoners of conscience.’ -06D--
