Salyan activist asks the President to protect him from the tyranny of the local authorities
Emil Mammadov, the head of the NGO in Salyan "Promoting Democracy" appealed to President Ilham Aliyev and Interior Minister Ramil Usubov, and complained of harassment by the chief executive of Salyan district Tahir Kerimov.
The campaign of harassment began after Mammadov complained to the presidential administration about negative phenomena in the region, abuse and using the budget by local authorities.
Thereafter, the pressure began not only on Mammadov, but also on his colleagues. On April 4, Tofig Gasimov, a member of the NGO "Democracy Promotion" was arrested on concocted charges.
In addition, representatives of various budget organizations are summoned to the region police, and they are made to give evidence against Mammadov and Gasimov.
Mammadov said that himself and others are persecuted for civic activism and criticism of the negative actions in the area. Mammadov asks the President and Interior Minister to assist in stopping the pressure on activists in civil society.—06D--
