Trial in Case of Yunis Safarov to Be Held in Baku Serious Crimes Court
Baku / 06.03.20 / Turan: The trial of those accused of attempted assassination of the head of Ganja Elmar Veliyev will continue to be held in the Baku Serious Crimes Court. The case will be examined by the judiciary, chaired by Afgan Hajiyev.
The next meeting is scheduled for March 18. The defendants in this case are: Yunis Safarov, the perpetrator of the attempt on Veliyev, and another 12 persons.
Earlier, the case was examined by the Ganja Serious Crimes Court in the building of the Sabunchu District Court of Baku. However, on February 17, lawyers petitioned for a trial in Ganja or the Baku Serious Crimes Court, since the Sabunchu court’s courtroom is extremely small.
Lawyers at the same time challenged the composition of the court, since Judge Natig Aliyev is a relative of the victim, the former head of Ganja, Elmar Veliyev.
The court did not respond to the second application.
* On July 3, 2018 in Ganja an attempt was made on the then head of the city Elmar Veliyev. The Ganja native Yunis Safarov injured him and the bodyguard. After that, on July 10, a protest rally against the head of the city was held in front of the Ganja administration building. On the same day, riots broke out in the city, during which two police officers were killed, and after that mass arrests of believers and others began.
In these events, criminal proceedings were instituted against 70 people. The defendants were sentenced to imprisonment from 6 to 18 years. About 10 people were conditionally released.
The cases of two groups of those arrested are pending before the court of appeal.
The trial of Safarov and a group of individuals began in January. Two more defendants in this case were liquidated during special operations by security forces. —06D-
