Georgia applies for EU membership
Baku / 02.02.22 / Turan: The Georgian government is urgently preparing an application for the status of a candidate member of the European Union, said Irakli Kobakhidze, chairman of the ruling Georgian Dream party.
A few days ago, Ukraine applied for EU membership. On Tuesday, the European Parliament by a majority vote approved a resolution in which it called for granting Ukraine the status of an EU candidate country.
"The government of Georgia is urgently preparing an application for obtaining the status of a candidate member of the European Union, which will be submitted to the structures of the European Union on March 3," Kobakhidze said at a briefing on Wednesday.
He urged the European Union to "extraordinarily" consider the application and make a decision on awarding Georgia the status of a candidate member of the EU.
In June 2014, Georgia and the EU signed an association agreement, part of which is an agreement on a free trade area.
Since March 2017, Georgian citizens have received the right to visa-free short-term trips to the Schengen countries (90 days out of 180) for tourism, business and guest visits.-02B-
