Action in defense of Hilal Mamedov (video)
About 40 people - members of the Committee to Protect the Rights of the editor of Tolyshi Sado Hilal Mammadov and civil society activists today held a protest in front of the Baku Court of Grave Crimes.
The rally was timed to coincide with the next hearing of the Mammadov case. Participants of the rally held hands and formed a human chain in front of the court. The action was silent and no slogans were announced.
"We have come here to express solidarity with Hilal Mammadov and protest against his illegal arrest and closed trial,” said one of the protesters, the head of the Human Rights Club Rasul Jafarov.
Noting the fabricated character of the criminal case, Jafarov expressed confidence that due to the efforts of the local and international community Mammadov will soon be released.
Earlier, on 15 February, members of the Committee to Protect the Rights of Mammadov held a silent protest by wearing medical masks on their faces, in this way demonstrating suppression of critical voices by the authorities.
Mammadov was arrested on June 21, 2012 and charged with illegal possession of narcotics, inciting ethnic hatred and treason. -16C06-
