Azerbaijan needs EU assistance for strengthening border controls
The European Union and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) launched the project "Strengthening the capacity of Azerbaijan on migration and border control."
On October 22 the Hyatt Regency Hotel hosted a presentation of the project involving the Government of Azerbaijan.
As deputy chief of the State Migration Service Parviz Musayev said, the project contributes to the implementation of agreements on visa facilitation and readmission agreements between the EU and Azerbaijan, which entered into force on 1 September.
The Head of the EU Delegation to Azerbaijan Malena Mard said the cost of the project calculated for 2014 - 2017 is 3.2 million euros, of which 2.6 million is to be funded by the EU.
The implementation of the project involves a number of government officials in Azerbaijan, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the State Migration Service, the Border Service, the Ministry of Labor and the Ministry of Interior.
The project envisages improving the effectiveness of border and migration control, interagency cooperation in this area, technical assistance, strengthening capacities to counter illegal migration and human trafficking.
In turn, the head of the IOM office in Azerbaijan Aktorpak Sarhan said the project is supposed to equip the border service with new equipment, special courses for police and border on illegal migration, human trafficking and other forms of cross-border crime.
Also, a system of monitoring will be created for the return of migrants in the framework of readmission and to facilitate their reintegration into society.
The Head of the Department of Humanitarian Affairs of the Azerbaijan Ministry of Foreign Affairs Marat Kengherlinsky said that the project contributes to the efficient management procedures and issues of migration, immigration, transit and shelter.
The project is implemented under the plan-2 program of institutional reform, for the implementation of which the EU has allocated 7.5 million Euros.
It should be noted that this project is another refutation of statements by some deputies and officials that Azerbaijan does not need international assistance anymore. In such statements they try to justify the banishment of foreign donors supporting civil society from the country. -06C-
