Supreme Court Exempts Ilgar Mammadov from Probation
Baku / 28.03.19 / Turan: The Supreme Court of Azerbaijan partially granted the cassation appeal of the leader of the REAL party Ilgar Mammadov. In particular, the court mitigated the punishment under Article 220.1 (organization of mass riots) and reduced the total sentence to 5 years 6 months 9 days. Having summed up the punishment in all respects, the court reduced the sentence to the term that has already been served to date.
Thus, the court released Mammadov from further conditional punishment with a probation period of 2 years, which he was appointed by the Sheki Appeal Court in August last year. The Supreme Court also withdrew his non-departure commitment.
Mammadov and his lawyer Fuad Agayev expressed disagreement with the decision of the Supreme Court. According to them, the decision of the European Court of Human Rights is not executed by the authorities of Azerbaijan.
Mammadov said he would seek full justification and participation in the next presidential election of 2025. However, the previous conviction does not allow him to exercise this right.
* Ilgar Mammadov was arrested in February 2013 in connection with the riots in Ismayilli and sentenced to 7 years in prison. In August 2018, the Sheki Appeal Court released him, replacing the remaining term with a suspended sentence, with a 2-year probationary period. -21С-
