Why Did Patrushev Visit Azerbaijan?

Baku / 09.09.17 / Turan: On September 29, the meeting of the head of the Security Council of the Russian Federation Nikolay Patrushev with the head of the Presidential Administration of Azerbaijan Ramiz Mehdiyev was held in Baku.

It is noteworthy that there is no information on the meeting of such high-ranking officials in the official Azerbaijani press. This is especially strange, considering that representatives of the Russian Foreign Ministry, the Ministry of Communications, the Federal Security Service and the Administration of the Russian President attended the meeting.

According to the press service of the Security Council of Russia, the meeting discussed issues of regional security, improving the legal framework for combating religious extremism and terrorism, as well as bilateral cooperation in the field of international information security.

It should be noted that recently the position and policy of Moscow and Baku in the issues of information security coincide. So, Azerbaijan in many respects copies the legislation of the Russian Federation in this field with the aim to block the work of local and foreign NGOs, minimize the role of social networks and control their users at their maximum.

Recently, the Russian media, and above all official television channels, have been actively criticizing the West for trying to "blacken the Azerbaijani authorities, who do not want to be obedient executors of the will of the West."

It is possible that Patrushev"s visit is due precisely to the fact that recently official Baku has been heavily criticized and pressured by the Council of Europe, the US Congress and many international organizations that require sanctions against officials who violate human rights.

Summing up the consultations, Patrushev expressed satisfaction with the relations between Russia and Azerbaijan on bilateral and multilateral issues.

From the Azerbaijani side, the President"s assistant Ali Hasanov and other officials participated in the meeting. -02D-
