Former Investigator Disagreeing with Official Policy Arrested

On 15 January evening, the Binagadi district court of Baku arrested the Zardab district prosecutor's office's former investigator Rufat Safarov. The court arrested him for 3 months and 26 days in connection with the charges of bribery brought by the Main Directorate for Combating Corruption under the Prosecutor  General's Office. Safarov called the charges absurd and rejected them. Thye defense will appeal.

Safarov is the son of a former member of parliament and one of the founders of the ruling party New Azerbaijan Eldar Sabiroglu, who last year publicly criticized the presidential administration head Ramiz Mehdiyev. In December, Safarov publicly criticized the authorities for violations of the law and the poor performance of law enforcement agencies. After that Safarov said about the resignation from the prosecutor's office. In turn, the prosecutor's office reported the dismissal of Safarov "for improper conduct." On December 21, Safarov's apartment was searched and his phone and computer were confiscated. In protest Safarov went on a hunger strike. On January 15 the Chief of the Department to Combat Corruption under Prosecutor General Kamran Aliyev instituted criminal proceedings against Safarov on charges of taking bribes.

On Friday afternoon Safarov was arrested and taken to the Binagadi district court of Baku. The court chose a measure of restraint - arrest for a period of 3 months and 26 days.

Turan was reported by Safarov's lawyer Bahruz Bayramov. According to him, Safarov is charged under Article 311.3.2 (bribery committed repeatedly) of the Criminal Code, which is punishable by imprisonment from 8 to 12 years with confiscation of property.

"Safarov denied the accusation and called it absurd, ridiculous and politically motivated. When the prosecutor spoke, he just smiled," said the lawyer.

The defense will appeal the court's decision.

In turn, Safarov's father Eldar Sabiroglu said his son faced two individuals who gave false testimony that the former investigator allegedly received bribes from them twice in 2014 and 2015.

"This is a revenge by the head of the Presidential Administration Ramiz Mehtiyev, because I criticized him. I appeal to the President of Azerbaijan. It is wrong to break the lives of young people," said Sabiroglu. -03C06--
