Second trial in the case of the blogger Mehman Huseynov
Baku / 30.10.17 / Turan: Re-consideration of the case of blogger Mehman Huseynov in the Baku Court of Appeal (BCA) is scheduled for November 3, his lawyer Elchin Sadigov said. In this connection, the blogger was transferred from the jail to the Shuvalan pre-trial detention center. On 29 September the Supreme Court of Azerbaijan partially satisfied the cassation appeal of Mehman Huseynov, convicted under the libel article, and his complaint was returned to the Court of Appeal. The reason for Huseynov's arrest was his statements about the use of torture against him in the police in January this year. In response, the head of the Nasimi district police department of Baku demanded to punish the blogger for libel. On 3 May the Surakhani district court of Baku sentenced Huseynov to two years in prison, having found him guilty of libel (Article 147 Criminal Code.) The Baku Court of Appeal dismissed the appeal against the verdict. Mehman Huseynov is known for his numerous videos about the corruption of high-ranking officials in the satirical online magazine Sancaq. He is recognized as a political prisoner.-05B06--
