The court leaves Faig Amirov in custody
Today Baku Court of Appeal chaired by Aflatun Gasimov considered the complaint of Faig Amirov, the financial officer of the newspaper "Azadlig", the assistant of the party leader of the Popular Front. The Court dismissed the appeal and upheld the decision of the Nasimi District Court to extend the arrest of Amirov until 12 January.
According to Turan's lawyer Fakhraddin Mehdiyev, the defense petitioned to change the measure of restraint on house arrest in view of the failure to conduct investigation and Amirov’s health problems.
However, the judge agreed with the prosecutor Sattar Rzayev and left Amirov in custody.
The court's decision will file a complaint with the European Court of Human Rights, said the lawyer, adding that previously the ECHR accepted the complaint of Amirov due to the arrest.
* The financial director of the newspaper "Azadlig" Faig Amirov was arrested on trumped-up charges o n having links with Fatulla Gülen and inciting religious hatred. However, the investigation quickly "forgot" about the charges, which it also put forward itself. Now the prosecutor's office is looking for evidence of illegal financing of the newspaper "Azadlig", trying to find a confirmation of tax evasion. The purpose of government is to finally strangle the last opposition newspaper of the country.-03B06-

The closure of Azerbaijan's land borders was discussed during the parliamentary session on November 25. While the government’s decision cites the coronavirus pandemic as the main reason—despite the World Health Organization declaring its end last year—Zahid Oruj, Chair of the Human Rights Committee in the Milli Majlis, pointed to other factors. He stated, "Opening the borders could result in an influx of hundreds of thousands of non-Azerbaijani refugees due to the Russia-Ukraine war. Additionally, in Iran, many are prepared to cross into Azerbaijan to safeguard their lives and assets amid military strikes. Such waves of refugees could lead to humanitarian, social, and cultural clashes that may threaten political stability."
