Why did Azerbaijan help Antigua and Barbuda?

The Azerbaijan Agency for International Development Assistance (AİDA) sent 20 boxes to the Caribbean state of Antigua and Barbuda (Antigua and Barbuda) with medical syringes made in our country. Help was requested from Azerbaijan by the leadership of the island country, the Foreign Ministry said in an official statement. Having accepted boxes with syringes on February 19, the High Commissioner of Antigua and Barbuda in Great Britain Karen-May Hill thanked the Azerbaijani people and emphasized that Antigua and Barbuda intends to develop diplomatic relations with Azerbaijan.

AİDA was established in 2011 as part of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan, to fulfill donor tasks on behalf of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The AIDA website says about 90 completed missions. http://aida.mfa.gov.az/az/static/1/. One of the latter is the transfer of humanitarian aid to Australia affected by fires for $ 50 thousand (02.02.2020). In an Australian aid report, AIDA explained the cause is fires. There is no motivation information in the help message for Antigua and Barbuda. Why Antigua and Barbuda turned to Azerbaijan for help, if the last hurricane (“Irma”) in this Caribbean state was in 2017, in 2018 this country suffered from palm disease?

In the last 2 years, only positive information has been received from Antigua and Barbuda. Antigua and Barbuda is one of the most prosperous countries in the Caribbean. The basis of its economy is tourism, and the gambling business is highly developed. Agriculture works mainly in the domestic market; fishing developed. The average wage in Antigua and Barbuda is USD 2,667 per month. In Azerbaijan, the average salary is about $ 300. GDP per capita on the island state is $ 14,000, in Azerbaijan $ 4,400.

It was possible to establish that in this Caribbean state, the Crossroads medical center, founded by rock musician Eric Clapton, operates in which they treat drug and alcohol addiction. Azerbaijani syringes can be addressed to this center. The center’s website could not find information about the Azerbaijani citizen who was treated there, while at the same time, data on patients in such centers are confidential.

The economy of Antigua and Barbuda is based on the provision of offshore services, including the creation of corporate offshore banks, ensuring the confidentiality of names of depositors, and the provision of foreigners with the citizenship of this country. For the registration and extension of activities in the state, banks pay fees. To obtain citizenship of Antigua and Barbuda, a contribution of $ 132,800 is enough. The government reviews 40 citizenship applications weekly.

Information about the Azerbaijanis who received the citizenship of this country could not be obtained. Why did the government of a rich Caribbean state turn to Azerbaijan for help, whose citizens earn on average 8 times less than in Antigua and Barbuda? The AIDA phone on which Turan intended to receive information about the reason for the help is not responding. –0-
