Rally Held in Strasbourg Demanding Release of Political Prisoners in Azerbaijan
Baku / 30.01.20 / Turan: A protest rally demanding the release of political prisoners in Azerbaijan took place in Strasbourg in front of the headquarters of the Council of Europe.
It was attended by Azerbaijani political emigrants living in Europe.
Emin Huseynov, executive director of the Institute of Reporters’ Freedom and Safety (IRFS), who spoke at the rally, called on PACE members to adopt a resolution on political prisoners in Azerbaijan, which will be considered at today's meeting of the Assembly.
He demanded that the leadership of Azerbaijan release all political prisoners.
Huseynov called on the Council of Europe countries to exert pressure on the Azerbaijani authorities to solve the problem of political prisoners “once and for all”.
Today, PACE will discuss the report of the PACE rapporteur, Sunna Evarsdottir, on political prisoners in Azerbaijan. The report notes that the problem of political prisoners in Azerbaijan has acquired a systematic character. It also indicates the non-implementation of the decisions of the ECtHR in the case of a number of activists. The draft resolution contains urgent recommendations on the country's full compliance with its obligations to the Council of Europe and respect for human rights.
According to local human rights activists, the number of political prisoners in Azerbaijan ranges from 120 to 160 people. –06D--
