Summit of Non-Aligned Movement Opens in Baku
Baku /25.10.19 / Turan: The XVIII summit of the Non-Aligned Movement has opened in Baku today, in which 158 heads of state, government, foreign ministers, as well as heads of international organizations take part.
The meeting was opened by the current chairman of the Movement, the head of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro. At his suggestion, the participants paid tribute to the heads of state, who died since the last meeting.
Among the heads of state and government who arrived at the summit, there are Presidents of Iran, Algeria, Afghanistan, Namibia, Venezuela, Sudan, Cuba, Ghana, Djibouti, Pakistan, and Turkmenistan, Prime Ministers of Libya, Nepal, Bangladesh, Malaysia, King Eswatini, and Chairman of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina (observer).
The summit was preceded by meetings of high-level officials on October 22-23 and Foreign Ministers on October 23-24.
At the summit, which will end tomorrow, 4 documents are expected to be adopted - the Final Document, the Baku Political Declaration, the Gratitude to the host country, and the Palestine Declaration.
The first three documents will reflect the positions of Azerbaijan on the Karabakh conflict and other foreign policy priorities.
The summit will confirm the position of the Non-Aligned Movement reflected at the Venezuelan summit in 2016 supporting the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan and the need to resolve the conflict on the basis of this principle of international relations.
On the eve of the summit, the chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement will move from Venezuela to Azerbaijan for three years.
The priorities of Azerbaijan will be further efforts to achieve the goals of the NAM - the protection of peace and security, and the contribution to the progress of mankind.
In addition, Baku will help increase internal solidarity in the NAM, strengthen the organization’s authority in the international arena, and promote the Bandung principles adopted in 1955.
The NAM was created in 1961. Currently, it includes 120 states, and it is the largest international political platform of states after the UN General Assembly. Azerbaijan has been participating in the NAM since 2011. —06D—

On November 13, representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the Afghan Taliban held talks in Baku as part of the COP29 conference. According to a report by Turan correspondent, the discussions took place behind closed doors and lasted for over an hour. No statements were made to the press following the meeting. Furthermore, conference security prevented journalists from asking questions to the meeting participants.

Kichikhanim Khalilova, the wife of arrested public activist and first-group disabled person, Famil Khalilov, reported being followed during her time at the COP29 conference on November 13. She had been accredited in the "Green Zone" as a civil rights activist. From the moment she entered the conference area, a young man began to follow her.
