What details did Charles Michel's statement and Ilham Aliyev's photo reveal?
Baku/01.09.22/Turan: The statement by the head of the European Council on the results of his meeting with Aliyev and Pashinyan gave ample food for thought and analysis of the processes around the Armenian-Azerbaijani relations.
First of all, Michel said that "a lot has been done" to implement the agreements reached during the last meeting.
At this meeting, an agreement was reached to begin "substantive work to promote a peace treaty" between Armenia and Azerbaijan. The Foreign Ministers of the two countries have been instructed to meet within a month to "prepare a draft peace agreement".
This is probably the most important outcome of the meeting. The other important result is the decision to hold the next meeting of the commission on border delimitation also in Brussels, not in Moscow.
All other questions: prisoners, demining and communications were considered in working order.
Michel's appeal to the leaders of the two countries to prepare the peoples for a stable peace, i.e. to give up belligerent rhetoric, was also a new issue.
To all appearances, the atmosphere at the meeting was positive, as evidenced by the comment of Presidential aide Hikmet Hajiyev, who praised the actions of Charles Michel.
Another evidence of the positive outcome of the meeting was Aliyev's first public handshake with Pashinian since 2020. For the first time in two years, the smiles on the faces of both leaders replaced the expression of dislike for the opposite side. How decisive this is, the near future will show. -02B-
