Status Quo in Karabakh Changing in Favor of Azerbaijan - Expert
The truce at the front has recorded not only the change in the contact line of troops, but also the status quo in the conflict. This opinion was expressed in an interview with Turan by the military expert Azad Isazadeh.
Asked how far the Azerbaijani army managed to move, Isazadeh said he did not have precise data. However, the achievement of military superiority is not only measured by the distance of the advancement of troops, but also by the occupation of important strategic heights.
The Azerbaijani Army managed to occupy and gain a foothold in a number of strategic heights in the north and the south of Karabakh, which will allow them to control vast territories. Moreover, the heights allow them to secure a number of Azerbaijani settlements previously vulnerable to enemy attacks.
Recent military operations have changed the status quo in the Karabakh conflict.
"All these years, the Armenian side has stated that Azerbaijan is not able to change the existing situation at the front. This gave an advantage to the Armenian side in the negotiations, which demonstrated intransigence.
Today, Azerbaijan has changed this situation by showing that it can independently conduct military operations and achieve success. This dispelled the myth that the Armenians had impenetrable defense and Azerbaijan will never be able to reverse the military situation in its favor," said Isazadeh. The events of recent days have shown that the Azerbaijani army is efficient and can successfully conduct combat operations in the mountains, he added.
Recent developments at the front were a serious blow to the credibility of the OSCE Minsk Group, which operates more than 20 years to no avail. Isazadeh believes that the new military situation increases the chances of accelerating the peace process.
"The fighting showed significant increase in Azerbaijan's military potential in comparison with what it was 20 years ago. In terms of Russia's neutrality, Moscow took a neutral position on these days and Azerbaijan may well solve the problem of liberation of its territories by force. This fact contributes to the revitalization of the negotiation process," Isazadeh believes. -06B-
