Almost 400 People Evacuated from Landslide Zone in Bayil Settlement
Baku / 25.01.18 / Turan: Eighty families with a total number of 390 people were evacuated from the landslide zone in the settlement of Bayil, near the main television tower of the country. Turan was informed about this in the Sabail District Executive Power.
Most of the residents moved to their relatives. Some are located in the designated places in schools number 49 and 51. They are provided with food and water.
Currently, the territory is under police surveillance, the executive said.
In turn, in the Republican Center for Seismology told Turan the devices in the landslide zone fix land movement in the area. "It is not clear yet whether there is a threat to the TV Tower or not. Devices fix processes on the ground. These signals should be analyzed for an adequate response. It's hard to say how much it will take for this time. It depends on the processes in the earth's thickness. This can take a week or a month," the spokesman for the Center said.
The Ministry of Ecology, for its part, declares that the cause of activation of the landslide was atmospheric precipitation and construction on the lower part of the slope, where the vertical slope was cut off.
The landslide zone is located 200-250 m to the south-east of the TV tower. Cracks with a depth of 7 meters and a width of more than a meter were formed here.
According to the observations of the Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan, 14 landslides have been recorded in the Bayil zone since the middle of the 19th century - in 1847, 1877, 1919, 1927, 1929, 1932, 1953, 1968, 1969, 1973, 1974, 1996, 2000 and 2011, respectively.
The most powerful was a landslide in March 2000, when an area with a width of 350 meters and a length of 450 meters (5 million cubic meters) broke away from the hillside and rolled down, destroying buildings and communications.
Initially, construction in this area was limited, and the construction of tall buildings was completely prohibited. However, all these warnings do not have an impact on officials and businessmen building and selling housing and facilities in this prestigious part of the capital. -0605 / 03D-

Baku, often called the "Caucasian Dubai," is increasingly known for systematic violations of residents' housing rights. During urban renovations and the construction of elegant new buildings, thousands of families in Azerbaijan’s capital have been unlawfully deprived of their homes. Many, recognizing the futility of resistance, settle for inadequate monetary compensation for their irreplaceable property. A minority, placing faith in the Housing Code, demand fair compensation from construction companies but often lose everything—both their homes and any form of recompense.
