Press Review 08/26/13

The main theme of the Saturday and Sunday issues of newspapers were the October presidential elections.

 

Official newspapers published the disbursement of wage increases for law enforcement agencies by Ilham Aliyev, as well as articles about Mehriban Aliyeva’s birthday.

 

The opposition press widely covered the nomination of a single reserve candidate from the National Council, Jamil Hasanli.

 

Azadlig

On August 26 the Divan (Board) of the Musavat Party will make a final decision on the nomination of party leader Isa Gambar for the presidential election.

 

Renowned lawyer Muzaffar Bakhishov believes that the Council of Europe may apply sanctions against Azerbaijan if the decision of the European Court on the ex-minister Ali Insanov is not implemented.

 

Rustam Ibrahimbekov said Nijat Guliyev, former Minister of Foreign Economic Relations, was arrested because of a telephone conversation with him.

Ibrahimbekov reported that Guliyev called him a few times.

The newspaper accused the head of the Caucasus Muslims Allahshukur Pashazadeh of engaging in politics. At the meeting of the Supreme Religious Council of the Caucasus, Pashazadeh campaigned in support of President Ilham Aliyev.

 

There is a standoff between Transport Minister Ziya Mammadov and Jahanghir Hajiyev, head of the International Bank of Azerbaijan over the company 

Azerinshaat.

 

Imprisoned theologian Taleh Baghirzadeh was again placed in solitary confinement. His lawyer, Javad Javadov does not know the reason for the punishment.

 

Yeni Musavat

Javid Hajibayli was elected chair of the youth organization of the party Musavat.

 

Ombudsperson Moldova Aurelia Grigoriu was awarded a gold medal named after Heydar Aliyev. Speaking in the Armenian parliament, she accused the Armenians of having committed genocide in Khojaly and of the occupation of the Azerbaijani territory.

 

The newspaper published a lengthy interview Jamil Hasanli, reserve candidate for president from the National Council.
